mattress fabric pillow

coussin This pillow cover made out of mattress fabric and buttoned with large untreated wooden buttons sports an attractive, natural design.

Make a 59 x 59 cm (23 1/3 x 23 1/3 in) pillow with some cotton fabric and stuffing. For the pillow cover, cut a 60-cm (23 2/3 in) square and a 60 x 65 cm (23 2/3 x 25 1/2 in) rectangle out of some freshly ironed mattress fabric. Cut the rectangle about 2/3 along its length. On each piece, sew a 1 cm (1/3 in) hem.

Take the narrower of the two pieces, and using some thread and an upholstery needle, make a few loops. Sew them into the hem and knot the thread sturdily on inside. The size of the loops depends on the size of the buttons you will use.
pillow detail

Stitch the sides of the pillow together, right sides facing each other. Be sure to correctly line up the pieces forming the buttoned opening. Sew on your wooden buttons with a thread and needle, and then cover your pillow.
