Here are some wood finishes you can make yourself for wood floors and furniture.
Protective oil coating:
Mix 2 parts linseed oil and 1 part turpentine.
You can add pigments: about 1½ oz. (50 g.) of yellow ochre to obtain a light shade or 1 oz. (30 g.) of sienna for a darker color.
Keep in mind that oil naturally tends to darken wood. For light colors, clean the wood beforehand with bleach and water, and then dry.
Apply at least two coats of this finish on dry, clean wood, at a 24-hour interval.
This oiled finish is ideal for creating an exotic effect on wood floors or furniture.
Wax:
Before applying a wax finish, prime your wood with the linseed oil + turpentine mixture to save on wax.
Let dry thoroughly, then apply two coats of wax.
Varnish:
Melt 1 lb. shellac in a quart of rectified alcohol. Apply carefully using a paintbrush.
This is a very high quality, inexpensive varnish. Powdered pigment can be added.
