dressed-up dresser
A little paint or some pretty wallpaper offcuts, and a basic RAST chest of drawers from Ikea becomes stylishly smart or charmingly earthy.
Stylish and smart:
Once you have assembled the body of the dresser, paint all external parts in a color that complements your wallpaper. Also paint the side edges of the drawers and about a 3/8 inch (1 cm) trim around the drawer front. Measure the width and height of your dresser. To cover the entire width of the drawers, you will need to join two lengths of wallpaper with gummed brown paper tape or masking tape. Then, using a craft knife, cut the required width of paper: the width of the drawer, less 3/8 inch (1 cm). Do the same for the drawer height. You can round the corners of the wallpaper pieces using the rounded edge of your wallpaper ruler.
When the paint is dry, cover each drawer front with wallpaper glue. Then carefully center and apply each piece of wallpaper. Using a soft brush, smooth out air bubbles. Customize the dresser with some pretty drawer knobs. Care for the dresser with wax.
Earthy charm:
Fill in the pre-drilled holes for the drawer pulls with a little bit of wood putty. For each drawer, create two new holes to mount new bamboo handles, Cut three 4¾ inch (12 cm) pieces of a stalk of bamboo and sandpaper the ends. Bore holes through the drawer front using a drill or a gimlet. Assemble three yarns of twine about 20 inches (50 cm) long and thread them through the bamboo handles. Set the handles aside.
Paint your chest of drawers in a soft, natural color. Using a hazelnut tree branch with a diameter of about 1½ inches (4 cm) and cut a hundred or so discs. Soften the edges of these slices with a sanding block. When the paint is completely dry, glue the discs with wood glue. Set them up rows, with different-sized gaps. Attach the handles to the drawers by threading the twine through the holes you made. Secure the ends with small screws.
