scented hearts

cardboard hearts The simplest ornaments are often the most beautiful. This set of folk-art hearts was cut out of cardboard and adorned with twine. For a more sophisticated look, you may prefer to use narrow ribbon, yarn or brass wire. Whole star anise is then joined to the hearts, giving off a subtle aroma. You can hang these ornaments on a tree - the spicy scent will mingle deliciously with the pine - or on the wall.

making Christmas decorations Print the heart motif. Copy it as many times as you want onto a relatively thin piece of cardboard. Cut out each heart. Inside the heart, use a pencil to draw a smaller heart, using the outer edge as a guide. Punch holes through the cardboard with a hole punch or a thick needle. Thread some twine (such as butcher's string) through the holes to form decorative stitches: running stitches, straight stitches, blanket stitches... Glue the star anise in the center. Add a loop to hang the heart.
